African World Cup Fans Hit by Travel & Ticket Costs

Despite a reversal on visa bond requirements, African supporters planning to attend the upcoming World Cup face substantial financial and logistical hurdles. The primary immediate concerns revolve around the high cost of flights, accommodation, and internal transit across the three host nations. With most African teams playing across the USA, Canada, and Mexico during the group stage, frequent international border crossings will be necessary for many traveling fans.

Visa requirements present another barrier, as nations like Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Senegal require specific documentation for entry into Canada. Furthermore, the price of match tickets remains prohibitively high. Tickets for Egypt's match against Belgium were listed near $600 (£444) on FIFA's official site, while the few remaining tickets for the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa reached $3,840 (£2,840).

Compounding these costs, FIFA's resale platform features wildly inflated secondary market prices, with some Category Three tickets for the opening match listed for an astonishing $34,500 (£25,550) each. Adding to the immigration worries, a US policy announced late last year may require tourists from numerous countries to submit a five-year social media history for entry screening, raising concerns about profiling and surveillance for the record 10 African teams participating.
