Amazon has officially purchased Globalstar, the company responsible for powering the satellite connectivity features currently found in Apple iPhones and Watches. Globalstar operates the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation that iPhones rely on when cellular or Wi-Fi service drops off, consuming most of the provider's existing network capacity now.

This acquisition positions Amazon to integrate Globalstar's infrastructure directly into its own nascent LEO satellite network, known as Amazon Leo. The stated goal involves offering mobile network operators a service to extend voice, text, and data reach beyond terrestrial boundaries, presumably for a service fee charged to the carriers.

For current iPhone users, Amazon confirmed a new agreement ensuring the satellite service continues uninterrupted, meaning Apple's emergency SOS features will remain functional. In fact, having access to the combined Globalstar and Amazon Leo constellations might actually improve the reliability and scope of that satellite connection for Apple devices.

This transaction reshapes the emerging direct-to-device satellite market, giving Amazon a ready-made operational constellation rather than starting entirely from scratch. The deal solidifies Amazon’s path toward becoming a major player in global satellite communications, competing directly with others in LEO infrastructure.
