Amazon officially confirmed its acquisition of satellite communications company Globalstar today, a move designed to bolster its nascent Amazon Leo low Earth orbit network with direct-to-device (D2D) capabilities. This deal resolves the potential complication posed by Apple’s existing 20% stake in Globalstar, which necessitated complex three-way negotiations between the tech giants.

Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon is paying $11.57 billion for the purchase, immediately securing Globalstar's infrastructure and spectrum assets. Crucially, Amazon has simultaneously struck a new arrangement to continue powering Apple's satellite features for iPhone and Apple Watch, including Emergency SOS via satellite.

Apple previously relied solely on Globalstar for emergency messaging introduced with the iPhone 14, a service that has already aided users in distress. This consolidation places Apple’s off-grid connectivity firmly within Amazon’s ecosystem, promising faster deployment and greater reliability for consumers needing service outside terrestrial coverage.

While current service functionality remains unchanged for the immediate future, the integration paves the way for accelerated innovation leveraging Amazon Leo's expanded network capabilities.
