"It clicked when I was 10 or 11." In September, she declined to defend her U23 title and finished second to Marlen Reusser, 35, who retained her elite crown. "I'm over the moon," Backstedt said. On 26 September, she leads Great Britain in the road race with Lauren Dixon. "It's going to be a hard course," she said. "We'll make it a really hard race." She plans to race all disciplines: time trial, road, cyclocross. "I love racing," she said. "I can't choose one." Backstedt will likely keep winning medals.
