Sainz pushes FIA to stay firm on 2027 power split

Williams driver and GPDA chief Carlos Sainz urged the FIA and FOM to stay firm on the proposed 2027 regulation changes during the Canadian Grand Prix paddock. He warned that manufacturer politics could stall a shift toward a roughly 60-40 split between combustion and electric power, and preserves competitive balance.

The draft plan calls for higher V6 fuel flow and lower energy‑deployment limits, while boosting battery capacity to prevent cars from running out of electric charge mid‑lap. Teams fear larger fuel tanks or batteries may force chassis redesigns, jeopardising the 2026 chassis carry‑over and prompting calls for a one‑off cost‑cap allowance to cover unexpected work, and could inflate development budgets dramatically.

Albon echoed Sainz, saying the 2027 package will only be a stop‑gap and that drivers still crave a “flat‑out spectacle.” He hinted at a future return to V8 hybrids with a smaller electric component around 2030. With development already under way, the FIA’s willingness to enforce the plan will determine whether the sport avoids another costly regulatory impasse for fans and sponsors alike.
