George Russell capitalized on Max Verstappen's crash to claim pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver set a 1m06.113s lap after avoiding an investigation for yellow flag violations, confirming he lifted at the corner where Verstappen spun into the barrier. Russell's strategic decision paid off as he secured his fourth pole of the season.

Charles Leclerc joined Russell on the front row with a 1m06.349s, while Lewis Hamilton missed the crucial gap to his teammate by just 0.059s. Kimi Antonelli lost significant track time due to Verstappen's incident, dropping from provisional pole to fourth place. The crash shuffled the grid significantly, with Verstappen recovering to start fifth ahead of Lando Norris in sixth.

The qualifying session became a strategic chess match, especially in Q2 where Verstappen deliberately saved his lap to preserve fresh soft tires. Red Bull Racing calculated his 1m07.183s would be sufficient, but the gamble backfired as he gradually fell through the field. Pierre Gasly ultimately finished 11th, 0.040s behind Verstappen, while both Williams drivers were eliminated in Q1 for the first time since the Chinese Grand Prix.
