Bernie Ecclestone has thrown his weight behind Formula 1's potential shift to V8 engines, supporting FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali's push for bigger, louder power units by 2030 or 2031. The former F1 chief told select media at the Austrian Grand Prix that returning to larger displacement engines represents the right direction for the sport.

Ecclestone specifically endorsed a three-litre engine configuration, stating he doesn't care whether it's V8, V10, or V12. This potential rule change comes as sustainable fuels gain traction and the automotive industry's EV focus evolves. The plan aims to create simpler hybrid components while reducing costs, addressing concerns about the current generation's complexity.

Max Verstappen has been vocal about the problems with existing power unit regulations, arguing they prioritize energy management over pure driving excitement. The four-time champion has even hinted his F1 future depends on whether cars become more engaging. Current rules require a 58/42 split between combustion and electric power for next season.

Ecclestone believes manufacturer support will materialize once teams aren't constrained by existing partnerships. He suggested the automotive industry's shift toward sustainable fuels makes this transition inevitable, with the new engine formula potentially arriving ahead of the scheduled 2031 timeline if manufacturers unite behind the plan.
