Russell Struggles to Match Antonelli at Mercedes

George Russell admits he is struggling to extract consistent performance from Mercedes' 2026 car, while rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli leads the championship with five consecutive wins – a feat only world champions have achieved. Despite Russell outperforming Antonelli last season, the 19-year-old now leads their qualifying head-to-head 7-6, with an average gap of just 0.084s in Q3. However, Russell notes the data often shows one driver three to four tenths faster, usually Antonelli.

Russell explains the issue isn't confusion but execution: "I know exactly why if I don't win... it's clear on the data." He describes a lower "hit rate" of finding the car's sweet spot compared to 2025. The new regulations – smaller cars, different energy management – force him to deviate from his instinctive driving style developed over 20 years.

"It's like if somebody asked you to draw the Mona Lisa," Russell said. "Maybe with practice, you will." He must consciously adapt techniques that were previously subconscious, sometimes emulating Antonelli's approach. Russell compares his inconsistency to Charles Leclerc's similar struggles, noting: "One day we're so competitive, and the next day we're not."
