Piastri Faces Stewards Investigation After Austrian GP Fourth-Place Finish

Oscar Piastri has been called to the F1 Austrian Grand Prix stewards following reconnaissance lap speed violations. The McLaren driver allegedly breached Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code by driving unnecessarily slowly during pre-race laps. He and a team representative must report at 5:10pm local time for the hearing.

Despite the investigation, Piastri secured fourth place in the race, finishing behind George Russell, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli. Starting from seventh position, he passed teammate Lando Norris on the opening lap and later overtook both Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton during the race.

The incident appears to stem from the virtual safety car period when several drivers, including Leclerc and Hamilton, made additional pit stops. Piastri maintained consistent pace throughout but never challenged the podium contenders. His fourth-place finish moves him to fourth in the championship with 80 points, one point ahead of both Norris and Leclerc.

The stewards are likely to impose only a fine or reprimand, meaning Piastri's race result remains secure. This marks another strong weekend for the Australian, who missed the opening two races of the 2026 season yet still sits competitively in the standings.
