During his annual media session with Dutch journalists at Zandvoort, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff addressed persistent speculation regarding a potential switch for Max Verstappen. While past discussions surfaced two years ago, Wolff now indicates the likelihood of a move has significantly diminished. Mercedes secured their 2027 driver lineup earlier this summer, effectively closing the immediate window for any cooperation.

Despite the current deadlock, Wolff refuses to completely shut the door. He emphasized that while Red Bull’s decision to extend Verstappen’s contract was logical given the team’s strong dynamic, timing remains the primary obstacle. “Yes, it is,” Wolff stated when asked if a future partnership remained in his calculations, though he acknowledged uncertainty over whether it would materialize by 2028 or later.

Reflecting on recent regulations and performance trends, Wolff noted that even a struggling Verstappen will eventually adapt and shine. With both teams committed to their current trajectories, any potential reunion remains strictly theoretical, reserved for a later era when contract landscapes shift. “Better the devil you know,” Wolff remarked, explaining that waiting for contracts to expire offers clearer options across multiple teams.
