McLaren's Chinese GP DNS: Battery Issues Explained

McLaren's disastrous Chinese Grand Prix double non-start stemmed from two separate battery failures in both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri's cars. The reigning world champions saw their drivers unable to start after Norris suffered a software-related battery failure that bricked his unit, while Piastri faced a hardware issue with an auxiliary component.

Mercedes HPP, McLaren's power unit provider, determined the problems were unrelated despite occurring simultaneously. Norris' battery suffered permanent damage and was removed from his component pool, leaving him with just two of his three allowed batteries for the season. Piastri's battery may be salvageable after fixing the connecting part.

The failures exposed McLaren to significant reliability concerns heading into the Japanese Grand Prix. With teams allowed only three batteries per season under current regulations, Norris' loss could prove costly if further issues arise. Both drivers and the team have emphasized learning from the setback as they prepare for the next race.
