McLaren Lags as Only Mercedes Team Without New Power Unit

McLaren stands alone among Mercedes customer teams at Silverstone, the only outfit not yet utilizing the manufacturer's latest power unit specification. While rivals like Alpine and Williams have fitted new components, McLaren CEO Zak Brown confirmed they are awaiting their turn. This situation stems from engine mileage, not a technical issue, as McLaren's current units still have life remaining.

Mercedes introduced a reliability upgrade in Austria, not a performance-boosting ADUO step. Both Alpine drivers, Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, received new power unit elements, and Carlos Sainz also switched to a completely new unit after issues in Austria. Alex Albon at Williams remains on his previous unit due to lower mileage, mirroring McLaren's current situation.

Brown expects the new power unit to arrive for McLaren shortly, potentially before the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, a track highly sensitive to engine performance. The team is also investigating drag as a contributing factor to their straight-line speed deficit. Despite the delay, Brown characterized the situation as "just what it is," emphasizing the team's focus on development.

This situation differs from early-season customer team challenges, with McLaren clarifying it's purely a timing sequence based on engine life. The anticipation is for the new components to debut soon, with Spa being a prime candidate circuit for their integration.
