FIA Votes on Mercedes F1 Engine Compression Ratio Rules

The FIA has initiated a vote on Mercedes' controversial compression ratio engine solution that has dominated Formula 1 paddock discussions since pre-season testing. Mercedes claims compliance with the 16:1 limit during static tests while achieving higher ratios during operation, prompting rivals to question the legality of their power unit. The issue has become increasingly political as teams debate the interpretation of technical regulations.

Nikolas Tombazis, FIA's single-seater director, emphasized this is about regulatory clarification rather than rule-breaking. The FIA aims to close potential loopholes in the regulations that were finalized in 2022 with power unit manufacturers. The proposed change would require measuring compression ratios both at ambient conditions and at 130C operating temperature starting August 1st, affecting teams that may need to modify their engines for the second half of the season.

The vote requires a supermajority from four of five power unit manufacturers plus the FIA and Formula One Management to pass. Tombazis stressed the horsepower difference is smaller than manufacturers suggest and that engine modifications would be minimal. The August 1st implementation date balances fairness to teams that have already designed their engines while addressing what the FIA views as unintended regulatory interpretations that extend beyond the original objectives.
