FIA Removes Presidential Term Limits in Macau Vote

The FIA has abolished term limits for its presidency and governing bodies following a vote at its Extraordinary General Assemblies in Macau. Member clubs from around the world approved sweeping changes to the motorsport organization's statutes, removing restrictions that previously limited leaders to specific terms in office.

President Mohammed Ben Sulayem pushed through the reforms with overwhelming support, arguing they align with other FIA bodies that never had term restrictions. The changes allow incumbents to remain in power indefinitely unless voted out or reaching the 70-year age limit before election. Ben Sulayem, re-elected unopposed in December 2025 for a second term, could theoretically seek a third term in 2029.

The governing body also strengthened eligibility criteria for presidential candidates, requiring demonstrated experience within FIA member organizations. A nominations committee was renamed the 'eligibility assessment committee' to reflect its expanded role in vetting contenders for office.

These reforms significantly consolidate Ben Sulayem's control over Formula 1's governing structure, potentially allowing extended tenure beyond previous constitutional constraints while making it harder for challengers to qualify for future elections.
