McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has admitted Ferrari and Mercedes appear quicker than his team in early F1 2026 simulations. The traditional powerhouses form a clear lead group, with Stella confirming: "In terms of race pace, I can confirm that Ferrari looks pretty competitive." His comments come after teams completed long runs during Bahrain's first pre-season test, where Mercedes initially impressed with reliability.

While Mercedes impressed with early reliability and Red Bull showcased its new power unit's energy deployment, Ferrari stole headlines by completing more distance than Mercedes when trouble struck. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both demonstrated rapid pace during Thursday and Friday sessions. Stella believes Mercedes and Ferrari currently hold the advantage, though Red Bull remains well-equipped and in the mix.

The Italian also urged the FIA to implement safety improvements before the season opener in Melbourne. Stella predicted the Australian Grand Prix winner will be determined by overall car performance rather than just the hybrid power units. "The fastest car in Melbourne will be the one that has the best downforce," he stated, emphasizing the importance of aerodynamic efficiency alongside power unit competitiveness in the new regulations era.
