Alonso blasts 2026 F1 cars as worst ever in Monaco

Fernando Alonso made his displeasure with the new‑generation Formula 1 machinery unmistakable after Friday’s Monaco practice. The two‑time champion, who has railed against the 2026 regulations since testing Aston Martin’s AMR26, complained that energy‑management requirements strip high‑speed corners of challenge. Monaco, a circuit where drivers rarely need to conserve, still forced him into erratic engine‑braking behaviour.

Alonso labelled the cars “the worst generation I have ever driven in Monaco,” citing inconsistent battery charging that leaves the rear axle either over‑charging or offering no engine braking at all. He described moments when a full battery prevented regeneration, turning braking into a “push” rather than deceleration. The Spaniard also flagged random downshifts that caught him out on the chicane.

The AMR26’s chronic under‑steer forced Aston Martin to fall behind even the midfield, with Cadillac lapping 0.178 seconds faster and Racing Bulls a further 0.546 seconds ahead. Set‑up tweaks failed to close the gap, underscoring the team’s struggle to adapt to the hybrid‑heavy formula. Alonso’s outburst highlights the steep learning curve ahead for all 2026 entrants. They must find a solution quickly.
