Sony Japan has announced a new lottery system for purchasing the PS5 Pro console in the country. Buyers must prove they actively use the Play Station by meeting specific eligibility requirements. First, applicants must have a Sony account registered in Japan, which they'll also use to purchase the console. They must be signed into their account and have played a minimum of 60 hours on either a PS5 or PS4, or both, between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026. Eligible applicants can submit their application starting October 7. Approved buyers can purchase a unit starting October 26 until November 2. If applications exceed available stock, Sony will implement a lottery system. This approach aims to prevent scalpers from reselling units and stop foreigners from buying consoles during visits to Japan. In the US, the PS5 Pro has been unavailable at major retailers due to ongoing stock shortages. Sony is facing component supply constraints expected to continue through early 2027. Despite the console's $150 price increase, demand remains high, particularly after the announcement of GTA VI, which is PS5 Pro Enhanced for improved performance and graphics.

The lottery system represents Sony's effort to ensure genuine gamers receive priority access to the PS5 Pro in Japan. By requiring proof of gameplay history, the company hopes to limit purchases by resellers who typically buy consoles in bulk for profit. The 60-hour playtime requirement across PS5 or PS4 systems demonstrates Sony's commitment to rewarding loyal customers.
