AI Transforms Small Business Operations

A new analysis from OpenAI reveals that four million people in the United States used ChatGPT in March 2026 to aid in planning, launching, or growing their businesses. Contrary to the high-tech startup image, these users are primarily operating small businesses like consulting practices, online stores, and service providers. For them, AI functions not as a product, but as a versatile tool that provides capabilities previously requiring additional staff or specialized software.

Entrepreneurs often juggle multiple roles, from marketing to customer service. ChatGPT offers general-purpose assistance, significantly reducing the administrative burden. Professional services and retail/e-commerce led user groups, each representing about 21-22 percent of activity. For instance, a contractor might use AI for estimates and customer communication, while a retailer could generate product descriptions and plan promotions.

The report differentiates between prospective and active entrepreneurs. Prospective users lean on AI for branding and market validation, whereas active users focus more on marketing, copywriting (26 percent), and customer communication. Active entrepreneurs also show higher adoption of paid ChatGPT tiers, suggesting a stronger reliance on AI when tied to commercial operations. This indicates AI's growing economic value is being tested and validated through immediate business needs.

Generative AI lowers the fixed costs of entrepreneurship by providing initial access to essential business skills. This can enable more individuals to test ideas with less financial risk and help very small firms operate more viably. While not necessarily fueling a surge in high-growth startups, this trend points to more businesses launching faster and surviving longer due to founders' augmented capabilities.
