OpenAI reports banning ChatGPT accounts used in a romance and investment scam originating from Cambodia. The network translated and generated comments in Japanese, Chinese, and English, often targeting men over 40, particularly those interested in golf.

Scammers used AI to craft public social media comments and simulate conversational exchanges, frequently translating messages between Chinese and target languages. They also generated replies in specific tones, like a "flirty young woman," using detailed fake personas including educational background and hobbies, often hinting at online investment.

The workflow involved public engagement, direct messaging, shifting to secure apps, romantic engagement, and finally, financial engagement. Victims were encouraged to invest in cryptocurrency or foreign exchange platforms, with scammers fabricating profits to encourage further investment. While some attempts failed, conversations referenced thousands of dollars, suggesting some targets were defrauded. OpenAI prohibits such uses of its tools and collaborates with industry peers and authorities to disrupt scam activities.
