Underground Hydrogen: The Next Big Energy Source

There's a growing interest in naturally occurring hydrogen gas as a potential clean energy source. Unlike hydrogen produced using fossil fuels, this geologic hydrogen could offer a more sustainable alternative for industries like steelmaking and transportation. Companies are exploring regions like the Midcontinent Rift in the Midwest, where iron-rich rock can react with water to form hydrogen.

Australian firm Hy Terra has already found gas samples with hydrogen concentrations up to 96% in Nebraska and Kansas, while Koloma, backed by over $400 million in funding, is also prospecting in the area. Researchers have identified promising signs, with boreholes in northern Ontario releasing eight kilograms of hydrogen per year each. Some companies are experimenting with stimulated geologic hydrogen, injecting water and catalysts into subsurface rocks to kickstart reactions.

Texas-based Vema Hydrogen is testing its process and aims for full-scale production by 2028. Despite challenges in storage and transport, geologic hydrogen could revolutionize clean energy production.
