Windows 95 Hologram Rorschach Controversy

Every Windows 95 box featured an anti-piracy hologram showing a baby pointing at the monitor. A government complained the infant was "naked," though only visible from the waist up. Microsoft replaced the hologram with a clothed baby wearing a shirt and overalls, but rushed production removed the arm animation. Original "naked baby" holograms are now collector's items.

Windows XP also faced complaints. The Red Moon Desert wallpaper was changed after users claimed it resembled buttocks. A generic person in User Accounts was said to look like Hitler, and a Switch Users character was deemed inappropriate by one government. All had to be modified.

Author Raymond has worked on Windows for over 30 years and runs The Old New Thing blog. He notes these incidents reflect more on complainants than software design.

The pattern shows how easily people project interpretations onto neutral imagery, turning everyday design choices into unexpected controversies across multiple Windows versions.
