OpenAI is accelerating its mission to build a fully automated AI researcher, a system capable of independently solving large-scale problems in math, biology, and business. The company’s chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, revealed plans to create an AI intern by September 2024 that can handle tasks requiring days of human effort. This effort, dubbed a “north star” for the next several years, combines advancements in reasoning models and agent-based systems.

Pachocki emphasized that while the goal is ambitious, OpenAI sees incremental progress through tools like Codex, which already assists developers by automating code generation and workflow management.
