YouTube’s interface bug forces browsers into 7 GB RAM loops

Late last week, Reddit and browser forums erupted as users reported YouTube tabs locking up and ballooning memory usage. Several browsers—Firefox, Brave, and Microsoft Edge—logged videos stuttering, tabs freezing, and overall system slowdown. In extreme cases, a single YouTube tab consumed more than 7 GB of RAM, crippling multitasking while users attempted to stream live sports or tutorials, performance dropped to a crawl.

Mozilla’s Bugzilla logs point to a runaway interface bug inside the video‑control container. The flexible menu beneath the player repeatedly checks button fit; when overflow occurs, it hides a button, shrinking the container and triggering another check. This creates a rapid hide‑show cycle that forces browsers into continuous layout recalculations, or layout thrashing even when the page is otherwise idle.

Both Firefox‑based and Chromium‑based browsers exhibit similar symptoms, suggesting the fault lies within YouTube’s front‑end rather than the browser engines. No official fix or confirmation has emerged from Google or YouTube, and Mozilla engineers continue probing the issue. Until a patch arrives, users may need to close tabs or switch browsers to avoid the memory drain during peak usage periods.
