Garry Tan, CEO of Y Combinator, has launched a new dark-money group called Garry's List to influence California politics. The 501(c)4 nonprofit, described as a "voter education group," will operate across all 58 counties and spend on candidates while keeping donor identities secret. Tan has long criticized progressive policies in San Francisco and now aims to reshape statewide politics.

This move formalizes Tan's years of political activism, which includes spending nearly half a million dollars in local races since 2015. The group has already published blog posts attacking public-sector unions, the teachers' strike, and a proposed billionaire tax. Tan previously called for tech executives to create "parallel" media and "replace the unelected parts of the system," telling the _San Francisco Standard_ he wants to build "political infrastructure for the next 20 years."

Garry's List joins a network of well-funded political operations in California, including GrowSF and Neighbors for a Better San Francisco. While similar groups like TogetherSF have seen mixed success - spending $9.5 million on a failed ballot measure - Tan's operation benefits from his Silicon Valley connections and Y Combinator's influence. The group's dark-money structure allows unlimited spending on campaigns while maintaining donor anonymity, a strategy Tan hopes will reshape California's political landscape.
