Alan Coopersmith has announced the first release candidate of the upcoming xorg-server 26.1.0 release. This version, tagged as xorg-server 26.0.99.901, includes all non-Xwayland servers such as Xorg, Xephyr, Xnest, Xvfb, Xwin for Windows, and Xquartz for macOS.

Notable changes since xorg-server 21.1 include the removal of autoconf/automake build system in favor of meson, support for DPMSInfo Notify event from DPMS 1.2, XFixes 6.1 with Allow Force Terminate option, and disabling byte-swapped clients and font server connections by default. Additional improvements include DRM platform support for BSD, log file relocation to $XDG_STATE_HOME/xorg, and Xvfb enhancements supporting multiple CRTCs and up to 13 mouse buttons.

Testing is encouraged, with issues to be reported at the freedesktop.org GitLab repository. Users testing Xorg should build against libpciaccess 0.19 for optimal compatibility. The release includes over 216 commits from multiple contributors, addressing various bug fixes and code improvements.
