Olivier Fourdan of Red Hat announced Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1 on August 19, 2026. This release candidate introduces several key changes from Xwayland 24.1, including removal of EGLStream support and addition of clipboard/primary selection bridging in rootful mode. The update enables multi-seat support via Xi2, adds wl_fixes protocol support, and improves RandR emulation.

Rootful fullscreen now defaults to actual output resolution instead of 640x480 scaling. System bell support through Wayland protocol is also included. Notable contributions came from Aki Sakurai fixing XQuartz compilation issues and Alan Coopersmith with 190 commits addressing various system compatibility and security improvements.

Testing of this release candidate is encouraged with issue reporting available through the freedesktop.org GitLab.
