NixOS 26.05 'Yarara' is now available with seven months of support through December 2026. The release managers yayayayaka and jopejoe1 announced this stable update, which deprecates the previous 25.11 'Xantusia' release scheduled for end-of-life in June 2026. Built through 59,703 commits from 2,842 contributors, the release strengthens NixOS's position as a unique Linux distribution with its declarative configuration management.

Package ecosystem updates dominate this release. Nixpkgs now includes 20,442 new packages while updating 20,641 existing ones and removing 17,532 outdated packages. On the configuration side, 85 new modules and 1,547 options were added alongside the removal of 25 deprecated modules and 355 outdated options. These changes maintain the distribution's commitment to keeping its package repository both secure and manageable for users.

A major architectural shift moves systemd to stage 1 (initrd) by default, deprecating the old scripted implementation slated for removal in 26.11. The release also marks the final support for x86_64-darwin due to Apple's platform deprecation and infrastructure constraints. GNOME 50 'Tokyo' brings accessibility and display improvements, while GCC updates to version 15 with LLVM remaining at 21.

NixOS 26.05 demonstrates the project's maturity through systematic deprecation decisions and infrastructure evolution. The community-driven development model continues delivering substantial technical improvements while maintaining backward compatibility where feasible. Users can expect continued updates through ISO downloads and standard upgrade paths.
