According to legend, giants once roamed the Earth—from the Cyclops in Homer’s *Odyssey* to Jack and his beanstalk. These humanoid giants walk, run, and carry heavy loads, just like humans, only at a much larger scale. But could human giants actually exist? In his foundational 1638 text *Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences*, Galileo Galilei argues that such creatures are physically impossible.

Galileo uses the analogy of an oak beam to explain how scaling works. A beam scaled up by a factor of 10 becomes 100 times stronger (since strength depends on cross-sectional area, which scales with the square), but the load it must support becomes 1,000 times heavier (since weight depends on volume, which scales with the cube). At a certain scale, the beam cannot even support its own weight. Applying this to giants, Galileo concludes that their bones, if made of the same material as human bones, would be unable to support their massive bodies.

This principle also explains why large animals like elephants and dinosaurs have thick, sturdy bones relative to their size, while tiny creatures like insects can leap many times their height or walk on ceilings. Conversely, shrinking humans would make them proportionally stronger and more agile. Galileo’s paradox reveals a fundamental truth: nature does not scale uniformly with size.
