Washington state hosts about 126 artificial intelligence data centers that evaporate millions of gallons of freshwater daily for cooling. These facilities use blue water from rivers and lakes, depleting resources that humans could use directly. University of California, Riverside engineering professor Shaolei Ren warns that industries are growing while the global water cycle falls out of balance.

Data centers generate massive heat and rely on evaporative cooling systems that pass hot air over water-soaked padding. This process sends water vapor into the atmosphere, causing local supplies to diminish. The problem extends beyond water use - modern AI models consume drastically more electricity than simple searches, and data centers are predicted to become the Pacific Northwest's largest power consumers.

Lawmakers attempted to address these issues with Washington House Bill 2515, which would have required clean energy use and power reduction during high demand. State Rep. Beth Doglio supported the bill, saying it would protect ratepayers by ensuring new data centers pay for their growth. However, tech industry lobbying killed the legislation in committee, leaving residents vulnerable to rising utility costs and blackout risks while AI companies continue benefiting from cheap energy.
