USA Today Partners with Palantir to Monetize Audience Data

USA Today Co. has teamed with Palantir to harness AI‑powered analytics and turn its vast audience into actionable data. Chairman and CEO Mike Reed told investors the partnership will “strengthen how we collect, connect and activate audience data to drive more effective and faster monetization.” Every visit and moment of attention becomes a signal that, when linked, delivers intelligence for better user engagement and higher revenue.

The move comes as search traffic drops worldwide. USA Today reported 158 million unique visitors in Q2, down from 180 million in Q1, a decline the company says reflects fewer referrals from traditional search rather than weaker demand. Kristin Roberts noted that search still drives about 65 % of World Cup coverage pageviews, but the firm is not “building our future on search.”

USA Today emphasizes that all data remains its own and that privacy and governance standards are maintained. The company says it will use Palantir’s platform to convert anonymous interactions into known relationships, enabling smarter subscription and advertising experiences.

Looking ahead, Reed hints at negotiating fair licensing with Google or, if necessary, cutting off scraping to protect revenue while keeping content discoverable through AI summaries.
