US Vendors Dominate European Web Presence

A study examining the primary web presences of 19,450 European companies reveals a significant reliance on US-headquartered infrastructure vendors. In the United Kingdom, 67.5% of company websites are served by US vendors, followed by the Netherlands at 53.6%. Even in countries like Italy, Spain, and France, US vendors hold a plurality, serving between 44% and 49% of sites. Germany and Poland are exceptions, with strong domestic hosting industries.

Across all seven European markets analyzed, Cloudflare emerges as the single largest internet-facing infrastructure vendor. It consistently serves more primary company websites than any other provider, including other US contenders like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, as well as European hosting companies and domestic ISPs. This vendor attribution focuses on the internet-facing layer, not the origin server location.

The research highlights a critical distinction for discussions around digital sovereignty and supply chain risk. Knowing which vendors front a company's public web estate is foundational, predating deeper dives into cloud regions or subprocessors. For European infrastructure providers, this data maps the competitive landscape; for policymakers, it establishes a baseline; and for buyers, it clarifies an inventory of dependencies.
