U.S. Science Support Strong, But Partisan Gap Widens

Most Americans want the U.S. to lead in science, but a growing divide exists along party lines. Pew Research found 84% see federal science spending as worthwhile, yet Democrats increasingly believe the nation is falling behind globally.

This shift follows years of federal funding cuts under the previous administration, especially in climate and health research. Strict immigration policies have also contributed to a perceived brain drain, pushing researchers overseas and weakening U.S. competitiveness.

Republicans now express more confidence in America’s scientific standing, while two-thirds of Democrats think other nations are gaining ground. This gap has widened sharply since 2023, signaling deeper partisan polarization around science policy and priorities.

Despite this, trust in scientists remains high compared to other institutions. Lawmakers from both parties continue to push for science funding restoration, though lingering pandemic-era skepticism may shape long-term public attitudes.
