H. Berthold AG, a German type foundry, first documented ⍼ in their 1950 Zeichenprobe catalog on page 7. Earlier Berthold catalogs from 1949, 1951, and 1952 show the same glyph on page 104 without naming it. The symbol doesn't appear in 1946 or earlier 1900-1909 catalogs, suggesting it was introduced around 1950.

The glyph's design resembles a sextant's light ray path used for measuring azimuth angles.
