Tor Alva: World's Tallest 3D-Printed Tower in Swiss Alps

A 30-meter tower in Mulegns, Switzerland has become the tallest 3D-printed building in the world. The White Tower, or Tor Alva in Rhaeto-Romance, was created by Nova Fundaziun Origen in collaboration with ETH Zurich to revitalize the tiny mountain village on the Julier Pass.

The structure's 48 columns were printed over five months using an industrial robot that applied specially developed concrete layer by layer without supporting molds. Complex algorithms simultaneously created both structural support and ornamental details. The columns were assembled in nearby Savognin before being transported to Mulegns via heavy load transport.

This architectural achievement demonstrates how digital construction can enable load-bearing structures without traditional formwork. The circular, four-story building commemorates 19th to early 20th century Graubünden confectioners who emigrated throughout Europe. Its modular design allows for disassembly and reassembly, making it both innovative and practical for its cultural mission.
