The Xteink X4 is an e‑ink reader priced at £40 that sticks to a phone’s MagSafe back. Out of the box it feels the 4.8‑inch screen renders crisp text, and it includes a 16 GB micro‑SD card, a card reader and a metal ring for mounting. The SD slot is fiddly, needing a stylus, and the default UI is Chinese but switches to English in seconds.

Stock firmware offers only three fonts and basic EPUB support, but the community has built several forks of the Cross Point OS. Cross Point now reaches version 1.3.0, provides OTA updates, 24 languages and SD‑card font installation without reflashing. Installation requires a single terminal command or a web‑based flasher; devices bought outside China lack USB flashing, so SD flashing remains the route.

Among forks, Inx feels most polished, adding a top tab bar, per‑book settings, Wi‑Fi Calibre sync and OPDS browsing. It handles EPUB, HTML and right‑to‑left scripts such as Arabic. The device can also run Micro Slate for keyboard writing or Tern OS for Rust apps. At £40 the X4 offers instant page turns, crisp display and true pocketability, outclassing larger readers.
