NHTSA has certified the 2026 Tesla Model Y as the first vehicle to pass the agency's new benchmark tests for advanced driver assistance systems. Vehicles manufactured on or after November 12, 2025 successfully completed evaluations across four newly integrated ADAS tests: pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention. Administrator Jonathan Morrison called the announcement "a significant step forward in our efforts to provide consumers with the most comprehensive safety ratings ever."

These tests represent a major expansion of NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program, which traditionally focused on crash protection rather than driver assistance technologies. The agency also confirmed the Model Y met all four original ADAS criteria: forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, dynamic brake support, and lane departure warning. By including ADAS in its testing framework, NHTSA aims to encourage automakers to prioritize safety innovations that protect both vehicle occupants and pedestrians.

The expanded testing scope forms part of NHTSA's 10-year roadmap for NCAP, with additional improvements currently under consideration. Morrison set an explicit goal: "We hope to see many more manufacturers develop vehicles that can meet these requirements."
