Tech Publishers Lose 58% Google Traffic as AI Overviews Rise

Ten major tech publications lost a combined 63 million monthly organic visits from Google since early 2024, according to Ahrefs data. Digital Trends saw the steepest decline, dropping 97% from 8.6 million to just 269,000 visits. ZDNet fell 90% and HowToGeek lost 85% of its search traffic, while even the least affected sites like CNET and Tom's Guide saw declines of 47% and 50% respectively.

Most of the damage occurred after mid-2025, coinciding with Google's expansion of AI Overviews. Sites dependent on informational queries like "how to" guides and product recommendations suffered the most. Healthline lost 55 million visits (50% decline) and NerdWallet fell 73% from 25 million to 6.8 million monthly visits, suggesting the pattern extends beyond tech. The traffic collapse threatens revenue models for publications that relied heavily on search-driven advertising and affiliate revenue.

Four publications combined now get less traffic than the r/ChatGPT subreddit alone. The data suggests Google's AI Overviews, Reddit's rising search rankings, and users bypassing Google entirely for AI assistants are reshaping how people find information online. For tech publishers, the era of search-driven growth appears to be ending.
