The virtual private network tool previously struggled with icons disappearing into the notch area on newer MacBook Pro models, leaving users unable to access critical settings.

Apple's macOS design doesn't provide developers control over menu bar icon placement, causing icons to vanish when space runs out. Tailscale engineers implemented a temporary workaround using occlusionState data to detect when icons were hidden, triggering pop-up warnings. This quirky fix helped users locate their missing Tailscale icon but wasn't ideal for long-term usability.

Version 1.96.2 introduces a windowed interface that runs alongside the traditional menu bar app, offering searchable device lists, file transfer capabilities, and connection status monitoring. The update includes a mini player mode, Dock icon error indicators, and an onboarding tour. Tailscale is developing comparable Windows UI while seeking user feedback on the new macOS experience.
