macOS 27 Removes Controversial Menu Bar Icons

Apple has removed the controversial menu bar icons introduced in macOS 26 Tahoe with the release of macOS 27 Golden Gate. The icons, which appeared next to every menu item, drew criticism from designers and developers for being inconsistent and inscrutable. Prominent UI critics like Jim Nielsen and Nikita Prokopov called the feature a design failure, with top-tier developers rejecting the implementation entirely.

Third-party developers had already turned to open source code from Brent Simmons to disable the icons in Tahoe. Apple's updated Human Interface Guidelines now advise using menu item icons sparingly and with purpose, recommending them only for highlighting common actions and key features. The guidelines explicitly state developers shouldn't display icons when they cannot clearly represent menu items.

The removal represents a significant course correction for Apple's software design team following the backlash. Sources indicate the design team has been restructured and is now focusing on more thoughtful UI implementations. This change signals Apple is listening to developer feedback after the Tahoe interface changes sparked widespread criticism across the Mac community.
