If you managed to put Tailscale on a jailbroken Kindle before it updated too far ahead, you got something pretty great, even if it wasn't the full Tailscale experience. Open‑source developers have improved the Tailscale experience on one of the weakest computers you own. The updated implementation by Mitanshu Sukhwani adds several new features: Tailscale SSH is enabled by default, a proxy mode that lets apps like KOReader reach other tailnet nodes, and a full TUN mode that, on some Kindles, can make Tailscale networking work at the device level.

The KUAL app by greywolf1499 now offers proxy and TUN modes. With proxy mode you run tailscaled on 127.0.0.1:1055 and configure KOReader to use 127.0.0.1:1055 (SOCKS5) or 127.0.0.1:1056 (HTTP CONNECT). This lets you access Calibre/OPDS servers, Audiobookshelf, or any other tailnet service directly from the Kindle.

A KOReader plugin from Victoria Riley Barnett automates the proxy setup and works on PW5/PW6, Kobo, and Pocket Book. The community continues to experiment, so share valid setups on Reddit, Discord, or X.
