Study Finds Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals in Seattle Breast Milk Samples

Breast milk samples from Seattle mothers contain concerning levels of hormone-disrupting chemicals, including BPA, BPS, melamine, and triclosan, according to new peer-reviewed research. The study tested 50 samples and found 92% were contaminated with at least one of these endocrine disruptors, which pose risks to infant development by interfering with critical hormonal systems.

Ryan Babadi, lead author and senior scientist with Toxic Free Future, emphasized that these chemicals represent a 'widespread, systemic problem.' BPA and BPS appeared in 74% and 78% of samples respectively, while triclosan was detected in 62% and melamine in 92%. These compounds are linked to developmental issues, lower birth weight, and reproductive harms. Previous research on the same samples had already identified PFAS 'forever chemicals' and flame retardants.

The Trump EPA's recent rollbacks of chemical regulations raise additional concerns, as the agency has moved to undo limits on toxic chemicals in consumer goods and water. Babadi noted that people cannot easily avoid these ubiquitous chemicals through shopping choices alone, since they appear in everyday products like personal care items and plastic packaging.

Despite these findings, Babadi maintains that breastfeeding remains the healthiest nutritional choice for infants. However, the research underscores urgent need for stronger chemical protections rather than regulatory rollbacks, which would likely increase exposures across vulnerable populations including children, workers, and communities.
