Steam's latest hardware survey reveals Linux has surpassed 5% market share for the first time, reaching 5.33% of all polled systems in March. This marks a significant jump from February's 3.23%, representing a 3.10% month-over-month increase. The growth comes as Valve's SteamOS continues to gain traction, now accounting for 24.48% of Linux installations with a 0.65% increase.

While Windows still dominates at 92.33%, the platform saw a 4.28% reduction from February, suggesting users are exploring alternatives due to frustration with Microsoft's updates and functionality issues. Interestingly, Windows 11 experienced massive growth of 10.57%, pushing its share to 66.85%, while Windows 10 lost 14.89% and now holds 25.36%. This shift indicates users aren't simply upgrading but actively switching to Linux and macOS.

The surge in Linux gaming could signal changing dynamics in the gaming industry. As Linux approaches double-digit market share, major game studios may be incentivized to develop native ports rather than relying on translation tools like Wine/Proton. With macOS also gaining momentum at 2.35%, the traditional Windows monopoly on PC gaming appears to be weakening, potentially opening new opportunities for cross-platform development and competition.
