Start9 has introduced the RISC-V Router, a networking device built around the open instruction set architecture that aims to make advanced networking accessible to mainstream users. The router targets home-based self-hosters who need enterprise-grade features without the complexity typically associated with such setups. Shipping is planned for September 2026.

The device runs on a SpacemiT K1 8-core RISC-V processor with 4GB RAM and 16GB storage. Unlike conventional routers, it features a fully open-source boot stack including OpenSBI and U-Boot, plus published board schematics. The main limitation remains WiFi radio firmware, which stays closed due to industry-wide constraints for modern WiFi standards.

StartWRT, Start9's fork of OpenWrt, provides a modern GUI with Security Profiles that control device permissions, Internet access methods, and network visibility. Features include Identity PSK for multiple network passwords mapping to different security levels, inbound VPN servers, and outbound VPN chaining for privacy. WiFi blackout scheduling offers hardware-level radio control for specific time periods.

This represents a significant step toward democratizing network security infrastructure. By combining RISC-V's open architecture with user-friendly design, Start9 addresses the growing demand for transparent, self-hosted networking solutions in an era of increasing privacy concerns.
