Speedrunners Smudge SpongeBob Discs to Exploit Hardware Glitches

YouTuber SHiFT uncovered a dirty trick for speedrunning *SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom* that exploits physical hardware limitations. The method, dubbed 'gamer gunk theory,' involves deliberately smudging the game disc's surface to create intentional lag during gameplay.

Strategic smudges at specific points on the disc cause the laser reader to lose focus, triggering lag clipping. This pause window lets speedrunners manipulate glitches that advance them through the game faster than intended. The technique relies on hardware errors rather than software exploits, making it unreliable but effective for shaving seconds off completion times.

However, the risks are significant. SHiFT warns that smudging can permanently damage both the disc and original Xbox console. Even minor scratches may destroy the game entirely, conflicting with speedrunning's core principle of preserving vintage titles. The method differs from cartridge tilting, which manipulates data flow through physical pressure.

Despite safety concerns, the video garnered over 35,000 views in five days, demonstrating the speedrunning community's appetite for unconventional optimization techniques. SHiFT acknowledges Microsoft cannot prevent disc modification, though he discourages the practice due to its destructive nature.
