The smart home graveyard is getting crowded as connected devices lose cloud support and become useless shells of their former selves. The latest victim is the June Oven, a beautifully engineered smart cooking appliance built by former Apple engineers. Launched a decade ago at $1,495, it featured AI-powered food recognition, a built-in camera, and restaurant-grade heating elements. Weber, which acquired June in January 2021, shut off the app and cloud services this past Tuesday, leaving users with an expensive toaster oven and no software updates or parts support.

June joins a growing list of smart home casualties including the Nest Secure, early Nest Thermostats, Belkin's WeMo line, Neato robot vacuums, the Brava smart oven, Logitech Pop buttons, Bose SoundTouch speakers, and Sengled smart bulbs. While some devices were saved by local protocols like Zigbee, Thread, or Apple's HomeKit, most are left in a zombie state with smart features permanently disabled.

The silver lining is that most gadgets degrade rather than die outright. June and Brava still function as ovens, Nest Thermostats still control heating, and Neato vacuums still clean floors. However, remote access, voice control, and updates are gone. Some devices find rescue through open-source platforms like Home Assistant or community efforts, but these cases remain rare exceptions in an increasingly crowded smart home graveyard.
