Renewables Beat Natural Gas for US Power Generation in March

For the first time on record last month, renewable sources like solar, wind, and hydro provided more electricity to the U.S. grid than natural gas did. Think tank Ember reported this milestone, confirming a major shift in energy sourcing fueled by new clean capacity additions and seasonal weather patterns.

This March achievement coincided with milder spring temperatures, which naturally reduce the need for heavy heating and cooling loads typically met by fossil fuels. Consequently, fossil fuel generation dropped to its lowest level for March in at least 25 years, while renewables set a new high watermark for the month's energy mix.

However, the transition faces pressure from surging power demand, particularly from data centers installing new natural gas generators. This increased load is actively delaying the retirement of older infrastructure. Just last year, nine coal power plants slated for closure had their operating lives extended, often under emergency DOE orders.

Solar, wind, and battery storage are set to account for 93 percent of new grid capacity added this year, according to the EIA. Despite this clear trend toward clean generation, the immediate need to support rising demand keeps aging fossil fuel assets unexpectedly operational.
