Aaronson warns that fault-tolerant quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption may arrive by 2029, citing trusted sources in quantum hardware and error correction. He argues these developments will proceed regardless of cybersecurity concerns, making it preferable for US companies to develop them openly rather than foreign intelligence agencies in secret.

The newly elected NAS member urges organizations to adopt quantum-resistant encryption immediately.
