Scientists at Csiro, Australia's national science agency, have built the world's first working quantum battery prototype. Unlike conventional batteries, this device charges faster as it gets larger. In March 2026, researcher James Quach unveiled the breakthrough, which uses quantum mechanics to subvert classical energy limits.

Traditional batteries rely on electrochemical processes explored over two centuries ago. Quantum batteries instead harness quantum effects to deliver energy faster and with greater control, according to Dario Ferraro, associate professor of physics at the University of Genova, Italy. Quach's prototype uses an optical microcavity with two mirrors 100nm apart, filled with organic dye molecules. A laser creates hybrid light-matter states, enabling superabsorption where molecules act in unison.

The more molecules present, the faster the charging rate. The prototype charged in femtoseconds (quadrillionths of a second) and stored energy for nanoseconds. While the field is nascent and skeptics question real-world viability, advocates suggest quantum batteries could eventually power quantum computers or even everyday devices like phones.
