PFAS 'Forever Chemicals' Accelerate Aging in Middle-Aged Men

New research shows PFAS chemicals may be causing men in their 50s to age faster than women of the same age. The study found that perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as 'forever chemicals' due to their persistence in the body, appear to accelerate epigenetic aging most strongly in men aged 50-65.

Researchers analyzed blood samples from 326 older adults and measured DNA methylome markers to estimate biological age. The findings revealed that men in this age group showed significantly more advanced epigenetic aging compared to women, with the effect being weakest in younger men and those over 65. Women showed some associations but they were smaller and less consistent.

The study's lead author noted that while the results are concerning, they show associations rather than causation. The research adds to growing evidence about PFAS health impacts, which include cancer, hormone disruption, and fertility issues. The chemical industry has pushed back on the findings, calling the study 'exploratory' and based on older data.
