Google's OpenTitan, the first open source silicon Root of Trust, is now shipping in commercially available Chromebooks. This marks a major milestone for the project, which began seven years ago as a collaboration between Google and open source communities. The first OpenTitan part is being produced by Nuvoton, a leader in silicon security.

OpenTitan provides a high-quality, low-cost hardware Root of Trust that can be used across the Google ecosystem and beyond. Its open source nature allows users to review and test its capabilities with unprecedented transparency. The project, supported by lowRISC C.I.C., has achieved industry-leading design verification with over 90% functional and code coverage and 40,000+ nightly tests.

The OpenTitan chip supports post-quantum cryptography secure boot using SLH-DSA, future-proofing devices against quantum computing threats. Google is already working on a second-generation part supporting lattice-based PQC for secure boot and attestation. With over 29,200 commits and 275+ contributors, the OpenTitan community continues to grow rapidly.
